Location:

Tiergarten opposite to the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, 10785 Berlin

Facts:

  • Installed in 1999
  • Wishes to connect people and promote world peace

The Global Stone Project is an artistic installation in Tiergarten consisting of 5 stones coming from 5 continents. Each stone has a sister stone looking similar that were left behind when they came to Berlin and each stone represents a step towards world peace.

The Love stone however, is making people angry. Taken by Wolfgang Kraker von Schwarzenfeld from Venezuela, this beautiful pinkish stone is considered holy by the Pemón people. To them, the stone is a member of their community. Before being the Love stone from the Americas in Tiergarten, the rock was the sacred Kueka Stone and it was taken without the Pemón’s consent.

After much discussion, Germany has agreed to return the stone as long as Venezuela sends another suitable one to replace it. And you thought that Germany’s treasure hunt times were limited to the Museum Island, right?
